“That’s not the way the world really works anymore. We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality — judiciously, as you will — we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors… and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.” -- Karl Rove, adviser to George W Bush. Indeed, spoken like a true megalomaniac intoxicated on Imperial POWER; however, Rove forgot the most important element in his contemptuous, pathological statement -- ‘with CONSENT from the Masses,’ and therein lies the crucial factor.
Empires and powerful States cannot function effectively without the support of the people, plain to understand. And so effective change or reform relies on that support base. Though it is important to understand the nature of this ‘support,’ acquiescence or by volition, and as history records most empires manage/rule their populations via myths, lies/propaganda, outright social oppression/policing, military pressure, psychological pressure (fear), etc; so the support is largely Acquiescent or PASSIVE. In other words, ruling elites have always run the show if the masses fail to act to counter elite pursuits or fail to respond to elite, usually criminal, self-seeking enterprises. This observation is easily verified historically, from ancient Egypt and Rome to recent Nazi rule in Germany and now totalitarianism in the United States of mass media propaganda, pan-surveillance and social police State oppression, America; the Boston (overkill) lockdown, for example.
A recent book devoted its primary discourse to the power potential of digital coders working for large IT corporations like Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft etc -- indeed, the writer is correct in making his assertions, however, another oversight or chosen omission, is that coders, though they are responsible for maintaining/creating large IT corporations are on a fraction of the wages earned by owners and executives. They are in fact no better off than ancient Roman House slaves whose living conditions were certainly above those slaves working in mines and other grueling forced works. Nevertheless, slaves they were and they knew it, as do coders today; most coders fail to realise the REAL power they wield due to the FACT that the world is so HEAVILY dependent on digital code/technologies that it would collapse ENTIRELY without maintenance, support, innovation/development, and that power applies moreso to the digital elites (expert or ‘uber’ coders/hackers) NOT to the greedy, unappreciative owners and executives of large IT companies. There is no escaping the fact that the WORLD is entirely DEPENDENT on digital technologies and expert coders today, furthermore, no specialised work-force has ever had this much potential power or influence in HISTORY.
Comparative analysis verifies the above; sure, expert coders make far more money than postal workers but they are enslaved nonetheless and have very little direct influence on the directions their companies take, they are told what to do and do it, lest they forfeit their above average wages and lifestyles.
HOWEVER, imagine if these coders woke to the fact of their inherent power and formed guilds incorporating the best coders in the nation that currently work for an assortment of competing IT and other companies. The guild could easily ensure higher wages, rewards and protections if unfairly treated, as their work is CRITICAL to the survival and performance of the companies for which they work and the world as we know it -- power like that is truly awesome and yet it goes begging.
The same also applies to a lesser extent in all jobs lower in the wage scale, which is why unions were formed which produced huge beneficial results for workers that were taken for granted, maltreatment, excessive hours and subsistence wages prevailed prior to the formation of unions. Indeed, many necessary union reforms are with us today, the 35 or 40 hour week for instance and paid overtime, which conditions corporations are subverting as I write. Why so? Unions have been thoroughly appropriated and corrupted by management today, in fact, in Australia one road to Prime Minister is via Union leadership and note that all PMs today serve elites.
Whereas guilds offer a better alternative to Unions today, as structures are less hierarchical and therefore not easily prone to external appropriation/corruption, the highly educated rank and file, in reference to coders, would simply not tolerate or allow the appropriation or corruption of the GUILD.
Must opportunity continue to go begging? YOU people actually RUN THE WORLD, unprecedented, wake to that FACT and champion fair play and justice for ALL -- AND take no shit from any corporate exploitative arsehole like Bezos, Wall Street and ilk. In fact you are able to have world leaders grovelling at your feet, as they can’t kill uber experts as you ‘may’ have ensured that if threatened, ‘worms’ and other highly destructive digital nasties infect GLOBAL networks.
Now suck on that REALITY, Mr Karl Rove and other expendable, ANTIQUATED elites.
